At Ostrich we've talked about what we can do to help carers and people with dementia (creating dementia-friendly gardens, using films to trigger memories or Talking Mats to communicate) and we are very happy now to be able to share with you the inspiring life of Norman Mc Namara, who’s been living with dementia for 5 years now and fighting it with all his might. Thank you Norrms for accepting to write a guest blog for us.
Hello, my name is Norman (Norrms) Mc Namara and at the age of just 50 years old (five years ago now) I was diagnosed with Early onset Dementia (Alzheimer’s Type); three years after that I was re diagnosed with Lewy Body’s dementia, which as you can imagine was no less of a blow the 2nd time around! Both I and my family were devastated and it took a while to sink in. I was astonished to find out that there were practically NO services in place for anybody my age with this disease and even though I had a million questions not many could be answered, and so my quest to raise awareness and to try and change things began!
That was five year ago, since then:
These are just a brief look into what we have done up to now and all this has been achieved because we are breaking down walls every day and helping people understand that this disease doesn’t just come on overnight and you don’t wake up one day, turn to your wife and say “Who are you? As with any illness there has to be a start to this disease and it’s recognising the early signs that will give so many people a chance to go on and do all the things I have done, believe me, if I can do this anybody can!!
Please take a look at my own website which also has all my blogs and writings on it, and remember, if a person with early onset dementia can do this, imagine what others could do!!
And just to end on,
The world has never had a World dementia awareness Logo before, but thanks to my friend Jane Moore who designed this we do now!! This logo has now gone global and I would ask each and every one of you to have a look at the Purple Angel webpage and take her to your heart
Please remember all this can be done with the love and support of others, and couldn’t be done without the help of all you wonderful Carers out there, please join us on Sept 21st, hold an event, no matter how small to raise awareness and hopefully raise some funds for this year’s chosen charity Alzheimer’s research UK. This is the Just Giving Page to donate to, this way it goes straight to the charity themselves (Link)
Very best wishes to all, Norrms Mc Namara
